Chelsea and Tottenham to be charged by the FA

Chelsea and Tottenham will both face charges from the Football Association after Monday night’s tense and emotional game at Stamford Bridge.

The charges include three offenses of failing to control their players and staff both during and after Monday’s match. Spurs midfielder Mousa Dembele has also been individually charged due to his eye-gouge on Diego Costa. The FA have said that this altercation is more serious than a normal charge of violent conduct therefore making a three game ban “clearly insufficient”.

A statement read: “Off-the-ball incidents which are not seen at the time by the match officials are referred to a panel of three former elite referees.”

“Each referee panel member will review the video footage independently of one another to determine whether they consider it a sending-off offence. For retrospective action to be taken, and an FA charge to follow, the decision of the panel must be unanimous.”

Dembele, 28, has until 18:00 on Thursday to respond to the charge, while Chelsea and Tottenham have until 18:00 on Monday.

Monday’s game was a notably heated affair that saw two mass brawls and a total of 12 yellow cards dished out between the sides.

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino stepped on to the pitch at one point to separate Spurs defender Danny Rose and Chelsea’s Willian. Rose was involved in another incident after the full-time whistle that saw Chelsea manager Guus Hiddink being pushed to the floor.

Tottenham threw away a two goal lead on Monday to make the final score 2-2, opening the door for Leicester City to be crowned Premier League champions for the first time in their history.
