IFIRST visited Upton Park, West Ham’s home for 112 years, in April 1971, aged ten, with my Dad and his workmate Les. Manchester United, featuring George Best, were the guests.
To my disappointment, the ground was full an hour before kick-off. We couldn’t get in.
Those were the days of standing on the terraces and the attendance that day was a whopping 38,507, though still short of the 42,322 record set in 1970 v Tottenham. There were tears ...
