  As the European Championship approaches – and thoughts turn to the blessed Germans winning again – it is heartening to remember the 1976 final, which was the first major tournament to be decided by a penalty shootout ... and the Germans lost! Czechoslovakia and West Germany drew 2-2 after extra-time, but the Czechoslovaks won it 5-3 on pens, Antolin Panenka clinching it with a cheeky dink-down-the-middle penalty.
