Back o the Net! Why we love Scottish fitba, compiled and edited by Donald C Stewart and Paul Goodwin, published by Luath Press, Price: £12.99

There is always something to be said for a compilation book. For starters, you can dip in and out at your leisure, choose which short story appeals to you and move on quickly if one doesn’t take your fancy!

In truth, there weren’t many that disappointed in Back of the Net! Whether it was stories from fans of Scottish Premiership giants like Celtic or Rangers or those lower down the ladder like East Fife and Stranraer, the passion of the supporters shone through.

Indeed, fans of the smaller clubs often suggested that success – when it fleetingly came – probably meant more to them than it did those who are used to it on a regular basis.

But tales of glory and trophies aren’t what this book is really all about. It highlights supporters’ devotion to their club, what it really means to them and why it can be a big family, or community, factor.

It helps if you’ve got an excellent band of contributors for a book like this and that’s certainly the case with this Scottish treasure. There are heart-warming tales and brilliant anecdotes by the bucketload.

Co-compiler Paul Goodwin sums it up well: “In this wee book, we wanted to share some of the special moments and highlight that no matter the colours or the size of the club, the passion, loyalty and dedication we all share really is a special love.” Job done.
