IT WAS the height of the Cold War. Germany was divided. East Germany was in the firm grip of the Soviet Union and the USA had stationed nuclear weapons in West Germany.
In the previous year, the Soviets had launched Sputnik -the first artificial satellite into space. It was a psychological victory for Communism and started a space race with the United States.
